This story appears in the December 16, 2013 issue of Forbes.
Al Corbi’s residence in the Hollywood Hills has the requisite white walls covered in artwork and picture windows offering breathtaking views of downtown Los Angeles, but it has more in common with NSA headquarters than with the other contemporary homes on the block. The Corbi family doesn’t need keys (thanks to biometric recognition software), doesn’t fear earthquakes (thanks to steel-reinforced concrete caissons that burrow 30 feet into the private hilltop) and sleeps easily inside a 2,500-square-foot home within a home: a ballistics-proof panic suite that Corbi refers to as a “safe core.”
Paranoid? Perhaps. But also increasingly commonplace. Futuristic security technologies–many developed for the military but sounding as though they came straight from James Bond’s Q–have made their way into the home, available to deep-pocketed owners whose peace of mind comes from knowing that their sensors can detect and adjust for, say, a person lurking in the bushes a half-mile away.
It’s not hard to see why such cutting-edge technologies would appeal to high-profile homeowners. “We had an assessment done three years ago from a private security company,” says John Paul DeJoria, billionaire founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems. “They said … that every now and again you get a real kook, and what if they came to your home and tried to do something stupid?” Now his main residence has security “similar to that of the White House.”
He’s far from the only one. Chris Pollack, president of Pollack+Partners, a design and construction advisor based in Purchase, N.Y., says that while security has always been a given in building homes for his ultra-high-net-worth clients, the spending for home defense has increased markedly over the last five years.
What would you do if your homeland were invaded by a foreign army? How would you survive the onslaught of both the ensuing war and the facts of nature? This is a question that people all over the world have had to answer on a regular basis. Whether you’re talking the coastal people of Britain facing Viking raiders, the Spanish resisting the Moorish conquerors, Aztecs falling to the Spanish, Native Americans standing against European settlers or the massive populations of Europe being overrun by the French, the British, the Germans, then the Russians practically back-to-back.
Fast forward to now.
Survival in these scenarios seems like little more than stories of faraway lands or ancient history to most North Americans because it has been more than a hundred years since the last time it happened to folks here. There is no living memory of such invasions of North American soil, and therefore no real understanding of the fear and desperation such an event would cause.
I have lived in Alaska for most of my life. No matter where you go, even in the most modern of cities, you are never more than ten miles from remote wilderness. It is a truly beautiful place. As a friend of mine if fond of saying, “We live in a picture postcard.”
Many of us reading this site try to prepare for any eventuality, be it war, economic collapse, or any other form of TEOTWAWKI. We store food and supplies. We have bug-out bags and weapons ready at a moment’s notice. Our pantries are full. Our maps are memorized. Our path is laid out before us. But as German military strategist Helmuth von Moltke once said, “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.”
Another way to think of it is to ask yourself where are you going to be when the proverbial fecal matter is sprayed through the fan? Will you be where your supplies are? Will you be in an environment in which you can survive if you have none of your supplies available and no way to get to them? As a writer, this is a subject I’ve been looking into a lot lately as it is the theme of my next series of novels (ICE HAMMER beginning late 2014).

When we are planning for our family’s safety, preppers employ a wide spectrum of ideas, plans and approaches to getting their family out of danger or protect them from danger in the first place. This is a noble goal and one that I myself strive to achieve in some way daily. When you are planning on surviving though, it is important to take a minute or two and consider the people you are trying to protect. If your grand prepper plans for keeping the family safe or healthy are for whatever reason abhorrent to the same members you are trying to save, what good is that?
Two things made me think about this. First, my wife and I were watching previews for next week’s Doomsday Preppers show and from the trailer, you see a father who has built a tree-house as part of his plans to survive. The only problem is that his daughter is apparently afraid of heights. My wife told me this would be a good idea for a post, but in thinking about this I thought of some other examples where the person making the plans obviously didn’t plan on any of their people complaining.
Analyze your family’s strengths
When I first started getting into the subject of Prepping and learning everything out there that formed my thought process around threats, I was full of energy and ideas. I just knew I had the perfect plan to protect my family and I just needed the time and money to implement all of my ideas. Some of what I had hoped to do wasn’t really possible or practical with my family. For instance, I don’t live with Seal Team 6 so a highly dynamic, crack team of trained professionals wouldn’t be there to help me secure my home in the event of a collapse brought on by any number of natural disasters or man-made events. Now that I think about it, I am not sure I really want my wife to be able to kill me that easily…
Your family has strengths that you need to consider and this can apply to anyone. Just because you are the father of younger children, that doesn’t mean you are up the creek, but you do need to adjust your strategy and take advantage of these strengths. As an example, my wife is very smart and analytical. I try to run every idea past her that I have. This sometimes doesn’t go as planned but she has on many occasions pointed out flaws in my preps. Had I been Johnny Ranger and tried to do everything by myself, I would have made some pretty significant errors.
